Darlene Love - “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” (Letterman, 1995)

God DAMN, I will never get sick of watching this.

These weren’t even people who had direct management responsibility for people who did real work. They were part of the diffuse cloud of people who are in charge of the general principle of getting something done eventually, that you find everywhere in most large organizations

The Ship of Theseus, also known as Theseus’ paradox, or various variants, notably grandfather’s axe and (in the UK) Trigger’s Broom (based upon the “BBC” sitcom Only Fools and Horses) Is a paradox that raises the question of whether an object which has had all its component parts replaced remains fundamentally the same object.

Trigger’s Broom came to mind when I noticed that Archibald Leitch is listed as the architect of Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium.

And what struck me was how it was all so different. “I Get Around” sounded nothing like “God Only Knows”. “Surfer Girl” and “California Girls” both might both be about females, but that’s about the only similarity they have. I’m listening to hit after hit stunned that not only did Brian write these, the uninitiated might believe they were recorded by different acts.

And once I’ve completed this, I’ll be writing out pi to all of its decimal places.

King of the Cops - Billy Howard

My brother used to have this record, and I pretty much knew it by heart back in the late ’70s.

Just watching Blue Hawaii on TCM (34 years today since Elvis died), and seeing Honolulu airport reminded me of the “Honolulu? No on a surfboard” joke.

I just got the “the lass you made ooh” joke for the first time… there’s comedy there for listeners of all ages :-)

Anyway, not sure I’ve ever seen this Top of the Pops video; at least, probably not since 1976.

The ultimate Twitter client.

If anyone needs me I’ll be in the loft digging out a Spectrum :-)

Time Sink

I seem to spend vast amounts of time waiting… for code to compile, for unit tests to run, for WebLogic to deploy stuff (what does it do in the minutes that seem to pass between clicking “start” and it actually doing anything?)  The tools for Java development get better and the computers get faster, but the waiting remains.

Not really making a big statement about needing to move to Ruby or Python or some other interpreted or JIT compiled language, but if Java is to remain the primary development language for business, there needs to be improvement.

Anyway, xkcd got it just right, although I prefer a good game of office cricket or a nice cup of tea:

Who Do You Trust?

I’ve been wondering lately how non-technical managers, or managers new to a project, can work out whose opinion they should trust when arbitrating technical debates.  This quote from Merlin Mann seemed relevant:

“It’s true: never let the guy with the broom decide how many elephants can be in the parade.”
